Alameda Otis Elementary Secures $3,500 Edible Garden Grant Ahead of Zero-Waste Community Evening
Whole Foods Market Foundation funds raised culinary beds and pollinator plantings as island educators host sustainability forum.

Frank Otis Elementary School in Alameda announced on Wednesday that it has been awarded a $3,500 Edible Education Grant from the Whole Foods Market Foundation to construct an outdoor agricultural learning laboratory at its temporary campus. Administered through the foundation's Whole Kids program in partnership with Alameda Unified School District parent volunteers and the school board, the funding supports hands-on nutritional literacy and environmental science instruction for elementary students across the island.
School garden coordinators confirmed that the grant will finance four cedar raised planting beds, water-efficient drip irrigation lines, student-scaled gardening tools, and a dedicated border of native California pollinator flora designed to attract monarch butterflies and native bees. Teachers across kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms will integrate seasonal planting cycles, soil composting experiments, and harvest tastings directly into Next Generation Science Standards lessons throughout the fall and spring semesters.
The elementary campus milestone coincides with a broader week of environmental stewardship in downtown Alameda. On Friday, October 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., local environmental educator and author Jessica Jane Robinson will host an "Ecosystems Matter" book signing and Zero-Waste Community Evening at Julie's Coffee & Tea Garden at 1223 Park Street.
Friday's gathering will bring together Alameda families, student green-team leaders, and municipal waste-diversion specialists to share practical household composting strategies and plastic-free school lunch initiatives. Parents interested in volunteering for Saturday workday installations at the Otis Elementary garden or registering for Friday's Park Street forum can find sign-up schedules through the Alameda Unified School District portal at alamedaunified.org.
