Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) is seeking a foster or adoptive home for Duke, a dog just over 1 year old who has struggled with the stress of noisy shelter kennels, according to a community appeal in the Alameda Post, as Alameda residents and local storefronts unveiled Halloween displays across the island documented in the Alameda Post.
Foster or Adoptive Home Sought for Duke at 1590 Fortmann Way
According to FAAS staff, Duke is just over 1 year old and greets visitors with an enthusiastic wagging tail, but finds the loud indoor kennel environment overwhelming. Once outside in the fresh air, Duke settles down quickly, pays little attention to distant passersby or other dogs, and is easily redirected with treats while practicing leash manners.
Shelter staff noted that either a permanent adoptive home or a temporary foster home would give Duke a quiet environment to decompress. Prospective fosters and adopters can meet Duke at FAAS, located at 1590 Fortmann Way in Alameda, on Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (the shelter closes daily from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for naptime).
Island-Wide Halloween Displays Across Alameda
In a special Saturday, Oct. 31 edition of the Bear's-Eye View of Alameda column with photographs and video by Jeff Cambra — featuring roving canine reporter Mouf dressed in a 1920s-inspired striped lounge jacket modeled on a vintage Coca-Cola "The Pause That Refreshes" print advertisement — the Alameda Post highlighted festive storefronts and residential yard installations across the city:
- Storefront Displays: The Hearing Zone showcased a Día de los Muertos portrait, while Crispian Bakery displayed a chick in a skeleton costume.
- Haight Street, Clinton Avenue, and Grand Street: Residential and neighborhood highlights included a Golden State Valkyries-themed installation at 320 Haight Street, a laboratory display on Clinton Avenue, a high-fashion workout-gear display at PLAYA at 1325 Clinton Avenue, and a daytime Dolly Parton tribute at 825 Grand.
- Neighborhood Traditions: Additional community displays included multi-week yard installations curated by the Silvers and an annual high-tech display created by Giselle and Tom at the corner of Nason and Buena Vista.
