The Alameda Unified School District Board of Education appointed Erick O. Bell as an interim board member at its regular meeting on September 22, 2026. Bell will serve as a replacement for Jennifer Williams, who stepped down from her position on August 12, and will continue in the role until the end of Williams' original term in November 2028. This development is significant for the Tri-Valley communities of Dublin, Pleasanton, and Livermore, where the Alameda Unified School District plays a crucial role in education.

The appointment of Bell as an interim board member is expected to provide stability and continuity for the district, which has seen a slight increase in enrollment, according to Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Kirsten Zazo. Zazo reported that more families are choosing to keep their students in AUSD schools after fifth grade, rather than opting for charter schools. This trend suggests a growing confidence in the district's educational offerings and its ability to meet the needs of its students and families.

Erick O. Bell's appointment comes after a competitive selection process. The board interviewed three candidates out of 13 applicants, with Bell ultimately being chosen to fill the interim position. Bell, a Certified Public Accountant with extensive experience in auditing and fraud investigation, also teaches business and accounting through the University of California and the California Community Colleges. His background in finance and education could bring a valuable perspective to the board, particularly as the district navigates its financial and educational priorities.

The appointment of Bell follows a close vote, with the board initially tied 2-2 between Bell and Doug Biggs, the former Alameda Point Collective Executive Director. After deliberation, the board approved a motion to appoint Bell. This decision was made at a meeting where the board also reviewed enrollment trends, which showed a positive outlook for the district's future.

Residents of the Tri-Valley communities can expect Bell to begin his term as an interim board member immediately. The board will continue to monitor enrollment trends and other key educational metrics under his leadership. For more information on the Alameda Unified School District and upcoming board meetings, residents can visit the Alameda Unified School District website or contact the district office at (510) 337-7000. The community is encouraged to stay engaged with the district's activities and provide feedback as needed.
