Antioch wraps up a citywide streetlight conversion

Antioch has finished a round of streetlight conversion work at locations across the city, the city said in a notice posted Tuesday. Contractors began installing the upgraded lighting on July 20, and the conversion was scheduled to be complete by Aug. 14.

The city did not identify the individual streets, so residents who noticed crews on a pole outside their house over the past month now have the explanation. The work was spread across Antioch rather than concentrated in one neighborhood.

Antioch counts streetlights as part of its transportation infrastructure, and frames the upgrade in those terms: better visibility after dark for drivers, people walking, people on bikes and the neighborhoods themselves. The city describes the conversion as part of its continuing effort to maintain and improve public infrastructure.

Several details are missing from the city's account. The notice does not give the number of lights converted, what they were converted from or to, what the work cost, or which contractor did it. It also does not say whether another phase is planned for streets that were not part of this round.

Antioch did tell residents to expect more of the same. Crews will keep appearing along city streets as other infrastructure projects move ahead, the city said, which is the city's way of saying this was one item on a longer list.
