Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland Hills Launches Late-Autumn Telescope Viewings and Planetarium Shows
Astronomers open historic Leah, Rachel, and Nellie observatory domes on Skyline Boulevard for free weekend skywatching.

Staff astronomers, East Bay Astronomical Society volunteers, and high school Galaxy Explorers at the Chabot Space & Science Center at 10000 Skyline Boulevard in the Oakland Hills are welcoming Bay Area families this week to the center's late-autumn astronomy season and crisp October night-sky viewing sessions. Perched at 1,500 feet elevation surrounded by the second-growth coast redwoods of Redwood Regional Park, the nonprofit science center operates the largest public telescope complex in Northern California. Earlier autumn sunset hours and clear post-breeze skies in late October offer ideal atmospheric seeing conditions above the marine layer.
Every Friday and Saturday evening from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., weather permitting, Chabot opens its outdoor Observatory Deck free of charge so visitors can peer through three research-grade instruments: "Leah," an 1883 Alvan Clark eight-inch refractor; "Rachel," a 1915 twenty-inch refracting telescope; and "Nellie," a computer-controlled thirty-six-inch Cassegrain reflector housed beneath a retractable roll-off roof. This month's viewing targets include Saturn's rings, Jupiter and its Galilean moons, the Andromeda Galaxy, and autumn star clusters in Cassiopeia and Perseus.
During daytime museum hours Friday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., guests can explore the NASA Ames Visitor Center hands-on aerospace gallery—featuring full-scale lunar rover models, spacesuits, and fluid-dynamics wind tunnels—alongside full-dome digital shows inside the 240-seat planetarium theater. In partnership with the Oakland Unified School District, Chabot educators are also hosting weekday field trips for East Bay elementary and middle school classes.
Visitors planning to attend free weekend evening telescope viewings are encouraged to dress in warm layers for cool Oakland Hills temperatures and check live sky-condition updates online at chabotspace.org or by calling (510) 336-7300.
