With the winter rainy season approaching and the potential for strong El Niño storms across the Tri-Valley, the City of Pleasanton launched Storm Watch on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026—a citywide preparedness campaign combining municipal stormwater maintenance with free 24/7 sandbags and drainage reporting tools, according to an announcement by Tiffany Thurber for City of Pleasanton News.

Municipal Infrastructure Maintenance and Shared Property Readiness

According to Interim City Manager Joe Calabrigo, city public works crews are inspecting and cleaning storm drains, clearing street debris, and maintaining municipal drainage channels to reduce localized flooding risks.

"Preparing for severe weather is a shared responsibility, and making early preparations can make a meaningful difference," Calabrigo said, encouraging residents and business owners to inspect private gutters, downspouts, and drainage facilities before heavy rain arrives.

Free 24/7 Sandbags at 3333 Busch Road and MaintStar Reporting

Through the Storm Watch campaign, the City of Pleasanton is providing three core preparedness resources for residents and businesses:

  • Free Sandbags Available 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week: Free sand and sandbags are stocked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the rainy season at the city's self-service station at the Operations Services Department, 3333 Busch Road. Residents and business owners should bring their own shovel to fill bags, with a limit of 10 sandbags per household or business.
  • MaintStar Drainage Requests & Leaf Disposal: Community members who spot a blocked storm drain or standing water can submit a service request through the city's MaintStar online portal (or call 911 for immediate safety emergencies) and are asked to place leaves and yard trimmings into green organics carts rather than street gutters.
  • AC Alert Notifications & Updates: Residents can sign up at www.acalert.org for AC Alert emergency notifications and follow seasonal updates through the Pleasanton Progress newsletter and www.CityofPleasantonCA.gov/Storm-Watch.
