An unprecedented wave of mid-decade congressional mapmaking largely backfired on Republican mapmakers in Tuesday's midterm elections, helping Democrats expand their U.S. House majority across California, Utah, Texas, Florida, Ohio, and Alabama.

Republicans Projected to Lose Two-Thirds of 15 GOP-Redrawn House Districts

Over the past two years, Republican state legislatures redrew 15 congressional districts across Texas, Florida, Ohio, and Tennessee in an effort to pad the party's narrow House majority. Instead, Democrats are projected to win two-thirds of those 15 redrawn seats as suburban and working-class voters swung toward Democratic incumbents and challengers:

  • Texas: Democratic Reps. Henry Cuellar (TX-28) and Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) held their South Texas seats while Democrats Leticia Gutierrez (TX-9) and Jonny Garcia (TX-35) won redrawn districts; Republican Jace Yarbrough flipped only the open 32nd Congressional District (TX-32).
  • Florida: Democratic Reps. Kathy Castor (FL-14) and Jared Moskowitz (FL-25) won re-election alongside Democratic challenger Pia Dandiya in the 22nd Congressional District (FL-22).
  • Ohio and Alabama: Democratic Reps. Greg Landsman (OH-1) and Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) prevailed in Ohio's redrawn maps, while Rep. Shomari Figures won Alabama's court-redrawn 2nd Congressional District (AL-2).
  • Tennessee: Republican State Sen. Brent Taylor flipped Tennessee's redrawn open 9th Congressional District (TN-9).

Democrats Sweep All 6 Newly Drawn Seats in California and Utah

Conversely, Democrats swept all 6 seats redrawn in their favor across California and Utah:

  • California: Following voter approval of California's mid-decade redistricting response, Democrats won all five targeted districts via Senate Pro Tempore Mike McGuire in the 1st District (CA-1), Rep. Ami Bera in the 3rd District (CA-3), Randy Villegas in the 6th District (CA-6), Rep. Linda Sánchez in the 41st District (CA-41), and San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert in the 48th District (CA-48).
  • Utah: Former Democratic Rep. Ben McAdams returned to Congress by winning Utah's newly redrawn 1st Congressional District (UT-1).

Locally, San Ramon voters also cast ballots on 14 statewide propositions, beginning with the Associated Press's 9:20 p.m. election-night projection on Proposition 37.
