The Livermore Public Library has launched a community recruitment drive seeking dedicated volunteers to assist adult learners in mastering essential reading, writing, and conversational English skills. The instructional initiative, administered through the city's Project READ literacy program, will conduct a comprehensive three-part training workshop throughout October 2026. The training sessions will be held at the Civic Center Library, located at 1188 South Livermore Avenue in the heart of Livermore. Library organizers stressed that the volunteer program addresses an urgent need for personalized adult literacy tutoring across eastern Alameda County.
For dozens of Tri-Valley adults navigating language barriers, functional literacy support provides a transformative gateway to employment advancement, civic participation, and family self-sufficiency. Adult learners work toward tangible everyday milestones, such as reading prescription medication labels, assisting their children with school assignments, and studying for citizenship examinations. By volunteering just a few hours each week, local community tutors help bridge persistent educational disparities and foster greater economic resilience across eastern Alameda County. The supportive one-on-one relationships established through the program empower adult learners to gain confidence and achieve personal independence.
Supported through municipal funding and California State Library literacy grants, Project READ has delivered free, confidential instruction to Livermore residents for more than three decades. The program relies on trained civilian volunteers rather than certified educators, underscoring a personalized, student-centered approach to lifelong learning. The Livermore City Council and the library board of trustees have consistently designated adult literacy as a core public service vital to community health and workforce readiness.
Prospective tutors must complete all three required evening workshops, each running from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Library facility. No prior classroom teaching experience or specialized credential is required, as the library provides all instructional guides, curriculum binders, and assessment tools free of charge. Once certified, volunteers commit to meeting with their paired adult learner once or twice weekly for one to two hours per session at an agreed library branch.
Interested community members are encouraged to submit their volunteer applications promptly to secure instructional materials ahead of the opening workshop. Program staff are conducting informal informational interviews throughout the coming week to match tutor schedules with adult learners currently on the service waitlist. Residents seeking to enroll as volunteers or recommend a learner can email literacy@livermoreca.gov or contact the literacy office by phone at (925) 373-5507.
