More than 400 vehicles carrying 385 Oakland residents lined up along Edgewater Drive near the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday to drop off more than 30 tons of oversized trash during the City of Oakland's second free "Bulky Block Party" since the city relaunched the program in July, Oakland North reported Monday.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the final Saturday of October, roughly 40 Oakland Public Works employees directed four lanes of vehicles and operated heavy equipment to crush and load old mattresses, refrigerators, broken furniture, treadmills, scrap lumber, and yard waste into roll-off dumpsters.

Quarterly Relaunch After Two-Year Budget Hiatus

Oakland had suspended its popular monthly Bulky Block Parties for two years due to municipal budget deficits before restoring the free drop-off events on a quarterly schedule in July.

"People want to do the right thing when you give them an accessible, free way to get rid of large items," Oakland Public Works Operations Manager John Hillmon told Oakland North. "Every ton that comes through these lanes is material that isn't ending up on a street corner or under an overpass."

Several residents told Oakland North they had stored bulky items at home waiting for the event's return, including East Oakland resident James West, who dropped off an old mattress and box spring, and residents Mario Sanabria and Danny Deleon, who hauled in construction debris and broken household furniture.

Three More Bulky Block Parties Scheduled Through June

According to Oakland Public Works, three additional Bulky Block Parties are scheduled over the next eight months:

  • Saturday, Jan. 23, 2027
  • Saturday, April 24, 2027
  • Saturday, June 26, 2027

Between quarterly events, Oakland residents can schedule free curbside bulky-item pickups through their waste hauler or bring qualifying loads on Saturdays by appointment to the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex in San Leandro. Service details are posted at oaklandca.gov.
