Police and Privacy Commissions Approve $2.6 Million Five-Year Rooftop Drone Program
The City of Oakland is moving toward deploying automated police drones stationed in weatherproof docks on rooftops across the city to provide rapid aerial situational awareness for 911 calls while patrol officers are still traveling to the scene. Both the Oakland Police Commission and the Oakland Privacy Advisory Commission have voted to approve the drone-as-first-responder technology, sending the contract to the Oakland City Council for final authorization.
According to city budget disclosures reviewed by Oakland Report, the rooftop drone system is projected to cost $2.6 million over 5 years. The city plans to finance the $2.6 million expenditure through Measure NN, the public safety parcel tax approved by Oakland voters in 2024 on a campaign commitment to maintain a minimum staffing level of at least 700 sworn Oakland Police Department officers. Alongside municipal police technology updates, local commercial freight operators also tracked a cargo theft incident in which 6 pallets of Nvidia computer hardware were stolen after being loaded onto a Texas-bound truck in Oakland.

Serving under Mayor Barbara Lee—who has now been in office for 18 months—Lake pushed out 3 high-ranking municipal executives: the director of the Human Resources Management Department, the director of the Department of Transportation (OakDOT), and an assistant city administrator.
