Oakland Roots and Soul Finalize Historic Coliseum Interim Lease and Youth Soccer Community Fund
USL soccer clubs secure 2027 home matches at the Coliseum complex while establishing grassroots athletic clinics for Oakland and Alameda County youth.

Oakland Roots Sports Club and Oakland Soul finalized an interim licensing agreement with the Joint Powers Authority on Tuesday, ensuring that both professional soccer teams will play their entire 2027 home seasons on the natural grass pitch of the historic Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
The milestone sporting accord preserves professional athletic traditions at the legendary 63-acre venue on Coliseum Way while plans for long-term master redevelopment proceed. As part of the civic partnership, the soccer clubs established the Roots Community Investment Fund, committing 5 percent of net matchday gate receipts toward funding free after-school soccer coaching clinics, equipment grants, and athletic field maintenance across East Oakland public parks.
Oakland city officials and Coliseum Joint Powers Authority commissioners endorsed the operational agreement during an afternoon press conference, highlighting that retaining active sporting events generates vital union concessions employment and regional transit revenue for BART. Roots executive leadership confirmed that seating configurations will be tailored for intimate, family-friendly spectator experiences, capping standard match capacities at 15,000 seats.
East Oakland neighborhood youth organizers and youth soccer coaches hailed the community pact, noting that providing accessible local role models inspires adolescent athletic participation across diverse cultural communities. The clubs also announced subsidized $10 community tickets reserved specifically for Oakland public school students and local youth sports leagues.
The Roots will inaugurate their Coliseum regular-season campaign in March 2027, preceded by an open community fan fest and youth skills jamboree on Saturday, February 20. Match tickets, seasonal memberships, and youth clinic registration details are accessible via the club's official ticketing portal. Joint Powers Authority officials confirmed that collaborative discussions regarding multi-sport community programming at the arena will continue through the winter.
