Neighborhood creativity, live outdoor music, and waterfront history are drawing East Bay families to Alameda this weekend as residents celebrate a packed October cultural calendar. Along the 1200, 1300, and 1500 blocks of Sherman Street—stretching north from the intersection of Central Avenue and Sherman Street toward the San Francisco Bay shoreline—homeowners have unveiled elaborate daytime and nighttime Halloween yard installations. Municipal arts commissioners and recreation department officials noted that the self-guided Sherman Street corridor has become a premier autumn tradition for visitors from Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and Danville.

Adding to the festive streetscape on Sunday, October 18, local band Friends of Ken is performing a free outdoor neighborhood concert on Sherman Street from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Families strolling past theatrical skeletons, illuminated cobwebs, and interactive porch displays gathered along the tree-lined blocks to enjoy the two-hour evening musical showcase. Neighborhood council organizers and city traffic staff reminded drivers to observe 25-mile-per-hour residential speed limits and watch for costumed pedestrians after dusk.

Across the island at Alameda Point, local historian Dennis Evanosky is leading guided walking tours detailing the 1931 through 1942 Army Air Corps and United States Navy construction history of Naval Air Station Alameda. History enthusiasts meet at 10:00 AM inside the Main Gate on Navy Way, with tour admission priced at $20 per participant to support local heritage preservation programs. Historic preservation board members emphasized that the walking route highlights Art Deco hangars, seaplane lagoons, and wartime engineering milestones that shaped the East Bay waterfront.

Sunday's neighborhood gatherings follow Saturday's lively Alameda Donut Fun Run and Festival benefiting Girls Inc of the Island City, headquartered at 1724 Santa Clara Avenue. During the Saturday charity festival, 15-year-old vocalist and The Voice contestant Koumba Diallo electrified the crowd by performing the national anthem followed by a powerful rendition of Demi Lovato's ballad Stone Cold. Youth education district supporters noted that 100 percent of festival sponsorship funding goes toward literacy, science, and leadership programs for Island City youth.

Residents and visitors can explore upcoming youth fundraising initiatives and community programs online at girlsincislandcity.org or by calling the Santa Clara Avenue office at (510) 521-1743 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Details on Alameda Point historical walking tours and municipal autumn events are also posted at alamedaca.gov. Sherman Street Halloween yard exhibits remain on view nightly through October 31.
