East Bay transportation agencies managed two significant corridor disruptions on Sunday, October 18, as the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) enacted an immediate detour on Line 14 in Oakland following an earlier multi-vehicle chain-reaction collision on southbound Interstate 880 in Fremont. AC Transit dispatchers announced that Line 14 coaches operating between the Fruitvale BART station and the West Oakland BART station were rerouted around a non-AC Transit street accident. Commuters traveling across Oakland, Alameda, Fremont, Hayward, San Ramon, and Pleasanton were advised to check real-time transit alerts before departing.

Under AC Transit service bulletins issued from district headquarters on Franklin Street in Oakland, the Line 14 detour took effect immediately until further notice, temporarily closing several intermediate neighborhood bus stops in both directions. Transit supervisors stationed along East 14th Street and San Antonio avenues directed riders to designated alternate boarding corners within two blocks of the closed stops to maintain connections with BART trains. Over 90 percent of connecting bus transfers at Fruitvale and West Oakland BART continued operating within standard 15-minute weekend headways.

Earlier Sunday morning in southern Alameda County, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded at approximately 3:57 AM to a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder and on-ramp area of southbound I-880 at the Mission Boulevard (State Route 262) interchange in Fremont. By 4:32 AM, dispatchers received reports of a secondary chain-reaction pileup expanding to involve seven to eight vehicles—including a white Ford Transit van—after a passing vehicle struck the disabled car and spun into the main highway lanes. With occupants trapped in the wreckage, CHP officers requested three heavy tow trucks, notified the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau at 5:37 AM, and issued a 5:58 AM SigAlert blocking southbound lanes 2, 3, and 4.

Regional transportation commission engineers, Caltrans District 4 maintenance crews, and municipal traffic department officials in Fremont and Oakland cleared the highway debris and reopened the southbound I-880 lanes later in the morning. Safety board analysts noted that wet autumn pavement and pre-dawn glare along the I-880 and I-680 freight corridors require motorists to maintain at least four seconds of following distance. County transit planners are also investing $8 million in automated bus-lane camera enforcement and highway changeable-message signs to speed incident clearance.

Riders and motorists can check live bus stop reopenings on Line 14 online at actransit.org or by calling the AC Transit customer service center at 1600 Franklin Street at (510) 891-4777. Real-time highway lane status and Caltrans QuickMap updates across Alameda and Contra Costa counties remain available 24 hours a day via 511.org.
