Alameda City Council Approves Pacific Avenue Safety Redesign and Alameda Point Aerospace Lease
Municipal leaders endorse protected bike lanes on key West End corridor while greenlighting commercial lease for advanced maritime aerospace testing facility.

The Alameda City Council took decisive action on Tuesday evening during its regular municipal business meeting, voting unanimously to advance a comprehensive traffic safety overhaul for Pacific Avenue while approving a key commercial hangar lease at Alameda Point for Poseidon Aerospace. Meeting at Alameda City Hall on Santa Clara Avenue, council members resolved long-standing community concerns regarding pedestrian safety along the busy East Bay transit route while cementing the island's emerging status as a testing hub for green maritime aviation.
The approved Pacific Avenue traffic design implements continuous buffered bicycle lanes, pedestrian bulb-outs, and dedicated mid-block flashing beacons along the corridor between Webster Street and Main Street. City traffic engineers presented data demonstrating that the physical traffic-calming improvements will reduce vehicular speeding by 35 percent and provide safer routes for students traveling to Encinal High School and nearby neighborhood parks.
In a concurrent economic development vote, the council authorized the city manager to finalize a five-year lease agreement with Poseidon Aerospace for Hangar 41 at Alameda Point. The specialized aerospace venture plans to invest $4.2 million in building rehabilitations to support electric vertical takeoff aircraft prototyping, bringing 65 engineering and technician positions to the historic naval air station.
Alameda residents, cyclists, and local business owners can inspect the full corridor redesign blueprints, capital budget allocations, and lease schedules online at alamedaca.gov. Questions regarding public works construction timelines and commercial leasing at Alameda Point may be directed to the Alameda Community Development Department Monday through Thursday at (510) 747-4700. Street resurfacing on Pacific Avenue is scheduled to commence early next spring.
