Pittsburg extends its City Council filing deadline to Aug. 12

Anyone thinking about running for the Pittsburg City Council has until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, to file nomination papers with the city clerk. The city extended the deadline from Friday, Aug. 7, after an incumbent officer did not file by the original 5 p.m. cutoff.

Three council seats are on the Nov. 3 general municipal election ballot, each for a four-year term. The winners are installed in December.

To hold the office, a candidate must be at least 18 and a registered voter living inside Pittsburg city limits. The nomination paper has to be signed by at least 20 and no more than 30 people registered to vote in Pittsburg, and the signatures must be collected on the paper the clerk issues. Candidates also file a Statement of Economic Interests, Form 700, listing investments, income, business positions and real property interests, alongside the nomination documents.

A candidate may also submit a statement of up to 250 words on their education and qualifications, which goes into the voter pamphlet mailed to Pittsburg voters. That statement costs the candidate $1,011, payable when the nomination documents are filed.

All of the forms are issued by and returned to the Pittsburg City Clerk, whose office is on the first floor of City Hall at 65 Civic Avenue. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The city asks candidates to make an appointment rather than walk in, so there is time to go through the filing requirements.
