Engineering contractors with the East Bay Regional Park District mobilized heavy equipment on Tuesday to commence a comprehensive rehabilitation of the Robert I. Schroder Overcrossing, the prominent pedestrian and bicycle bridge carrying the Iron Horse Regional Trail above Treat Boulevard in Walnut Creek.

Constructed over two decades ago to connect the Contra Costa Centre transit village and Pleasant Hill BART Station with Walnut Creek trail corridors, the signature cable-stayed bridge accommodates more than 3,500 daily cyclists, runners, and commuters. The $1.65 million capital project includes complete sandblasting and anti-corrosion recoating of structural steel arches, seismic cable tensioning, and the installation of durable non-slip composite decking.

Funding for the infrastructure overhaul draws from Measure WW regional park bond proceeds approved by Alameda and Contra Costa voters, supplemented by state active transportation grants. Park District General Manager Sabrina Landreth explained during the project briefing that preventative structural maintenance ensures the high-traffic bridge remains structurally resilient and safe for another thirty years of regional recreation.

Commuter advocates and regional bicycle organizations commended the district for staging construction to preserve commuter access, noting that trail crews will maintain a protected five-foot-wide pathway across the span throughout daytime hours. Contractor crews will also replace outdated high-pressure sodium spotlights with dark-sky compliant LED fixtures that improve nighttime visibility for evening joggers while reducing electrical energy consumption by 60 percent.

Daytime bridge work will proceed Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM through mid-December, with periodic overnight lane closures on Treat Boulevard scheduled between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Park district staff installed detailed detour advisory signs at nearby trail access points along Jones Road and Mayhew Way. Commuters can monitor weekly project progress updates and register for construction alerts on the East Bay Regional Park District trail advisory page.
